AVING NEWS met with a Dunicof official who participated in the MIK HOT SPOT (Made in Korea Online Exhibition)'Korea Technology Venture Foundation' and conducted an interview.

Please introduce your company and the product.
Hi, I am Cameron and I am in charge of marketing & promotion at LiberaToe. I am happy to announce the new products since I've introduced the prototype to you last year. But before we talk about those products, I am gonna to start with some of the reason why we started these developments.

We have summarized the problems that the player from all over the world are facing as follows: △Complexity of multi-effects △Tap dancing because of analog pedal switching △Single channel's limit in tone selection △Difficulties of replacing pedals or changing route △Pedal boards getting larger and heavier △Too digital or too behind technology

It is not easy for most of guitarists and bassists to choose between 'Multi-Effects' which has flexibility in adjustment due to digital technology as well as 'Boutique Pedal's which they have decent sonic quality thanks to analog circuitry. So the question was, are there any ways to combine these two rigs' merits into one? We realized that the drawbacks inherent in existing effector systems are caused by the dichotomy design of entirely analog systems and entirely digital systems.

Although analog has a sound quality that digital still can not keep up with, it has the disadvantage that it is composed of electronic circuits, which are inflexible for the diverse usage, and really heavy and really big. Digital has the convenience of flexibility to edit things with a computer. However, the sound is still artificial and inferior to catch the player's picking nuance.

Did you have a specific objective for the development?
Our first objective in the development was the convergence of analog and digital into one. The sound processing itself is analog, so it keeps the sonic quality while it adopts the software for the signal routing, so essentially, we integrated the advantages of analog's sound quality and digital's editability.

Second, we discovered that the current pedal system was basically unchanged since the 1960s. Patch cables are used to connect pedals, so it takes a lot of time to replace or reshuffle the pedal board, and doing so was practically impossible while playing, and it is also really troublesome to do it even at the studio or at home. As a consequence, it was difficult to achieve the sound you were trying to make due to the system on a leash. We really wanted players to be able to spend more time on playing and not have to put so much energy into the configuration, reassembly, and transportation of the pedal board. So, our convergent technology integrates metal-plating and electronics, and it has made plug & play that can reconfigure all the systems within 3 minutes compared to an hour on the pedal boards. So, we were able to reduce the weight and size to less than half, and the price to about half.

Third, you usually set pedal knobs differently depending on if you are backing or doing solo, and in order to do this, we had to use two identical or different pedals since conventional analog pedals normally just have a single channel, and we lose the opportunity for the play we want. However, every LiberaToe effect modules offer dual channel and can be programmed into a preset. So, you can call for two different times of Delay, call for a different gain of Distortion for each purpose.

Now, for our fourth goal. With a normal programmable loop, you can choose one patch at a time like a radio button, or on the pedal board without a programmable loop. Pedals are independent and do not affect each other like check box buttons. This old way of doing things (Ancien Regime) doesn't really offer both of these advantages at the same time. So, when you use Delay for a moment in backing, you have to prep these presets for every case. Now however, you do not have to do this, you can use both the presets and the individual ON&OFF together.

Now I am gonna talk about reversal & parallel control as our fifth goal. The order of sequence between 2nd and 3rd slot can be controlled in a preset changing to reversal. So for example, when you set one preset to have overdrive in the 2nd slot and distortion in the 3rd slot, you will get Gain boosted Distortion effect. And, if you configure another preset to have reversal order between 2nd and 3rd slots, then you can get Volume boosted Distortion effect. Thanks to the dual channel adopted in every LiberaToe module, you may make the Overdrive's green channel setting different with the red channel setting for each purpose between normal and reversal sequences.

And, with the parallel effect, you can also split and send the signals to both 4th and 5th slots, and merge at the ends of each slot.

And, as the final point about the internal functions, within a preset you can include controls of input buffer, frequency enhancer, and external effects. When you use Fuzz, you may not want to turn on the input buffer. And, when you want to ADD THE final touch of the tone at the end of effects change, you may want to turn on the frequency enhancer. If you use external effects following LC/LO/MC/MO switching like an amp, you can control them as well.

Marshall 4x4 Cabinet based speaker simulation and Tap tempo control are also provided.

Please tell us about compatibility and scalability.
You've been using platforms incorporating the modules, but sometimes you may want to move a certain module separately into the pedal board, such as a pedal. In an opposite situation, you may want to use both your beloved pedals and LiberaToe platform. We prepared the shell which can hold one module to work as a pedal. We also provide Gnavatar module for incorporating maximum two pedals in the LiberaToe signal chain. Gnavatar can be also 2 way or 3 way split & merge mixer.

What is LiberaToe's vision?
Our vision is ultimately to become a convergence technology company that creates devices and culture that can richly and accurately represent the music that performers want to express.

We will not stop at solving the problems at hand and will continue to invent new solutions that are convenient for musicians. For this purpose, we are open to 3rd party participation, we welcome any collaboration on the areas including modules, extensions. As an example, a certain partner is developing Wifi-control for the LiberaToe platform.

Korea Techno-Venture Foundation (KTVF), which supported companies participating in the MIK HOT SPOT (Made in Korea Online Exhibition), is a non-profit foundation funded by the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) to promote new technology startups and support global advancement. Since its establishment in 2001, it has established a close cooperation network with research institutes, universities and related institutions, as well as overseas organizations in Japan and the Eurasia region, and have promoted step-by-step customized support projects that connects "startup - fostering - commercialization - global marketing" to create the entrepreneurship ecosystem. KTVF said, "As an accelerator that supports global technology commercialization through discovering, fostering, and investing in tech-startups with high growth potential, we intend to contribute to the success and job creation of small and medium-sized venture companies."

The global news network AVING News has begun holding the MIK Hot Spot (Made in Korea Online Exhibition) to help small and medium-sized companies enter the market and attract investment 365 days a year' AVING News has been running online exhibitions since 2005 and had 975 online exhibitions so far. Its YouTube online exhibition has placed itself as Korea's largest online exhibition hall that opens with 19,000 videos (booths) with more than 800,000 visits per month which means more than 10 million visits per year.

The MIK HOT SPOT online exhibition is scheduled to be held regularly according to the field, target market, and participating institutions, and it will be presented as a new type of online business by transforming the know-hows and values of the participating companies according to the trend. Companies that want to participate can apply and apply through the marketing support projects from supporting institutions in the local governments. Refer to the institutions for more information.
