[MIK HOT SPOT_KTVF] Korea Power Cell introduces its #1 selling lithium ion battery pack

2020-07-29, Jane Lee Reporter

Korea Power Cell has secured competitiveness by adding AI technology to lithium-ion battery pack. Currently, with more than 30 requests from companies for on-demand technology development, it is focusing more on developing new products than ever before.

AVING News interviewed Kwon Jin-geun, the CEO of Korea Power Cell, which participated in the MIK HOT SPOT (Made in Korea Online Exhibition) KTVF.

Please introduce your company.

Hi. This is Kwon Jin-geun, CEO of Korea Power Cell. We are a company that makes lithium-ion battery packs that are safe and long-lasting. The targets are lithium-ion battery packs for starting, operation, industrial, and energy systems.

The main thing we are focusing on is the battery for operation, and the battery for operation refers to the movement of a device by battery power. We are supplying a lot in these fields, and just to let you know, we are supplying more lithium-ion batteries for golf cars in the golf course show than LG or Samsung, taking number one in the market share.

Also, you might have seen cleaning cars go around Homeplus or E-Mart. They are run by lithium-ion batteries, and we are the top supplier in the field. Places like KEPCO that are in charge of power distribution intelligence need lithium-ion batteries for this function. Here, we are supplying the lithium-ion battery developed exclusively for KEPCO, and we are the number one supplier.

In recent years, we have been developing lithium batteries for forklifts and poclains with Hyundai Construction Equipment, continuing to supply lithium-ion batteries to various fields.

Please tell us about the members of Korea Power Cell.

The main members of Korea Power Cell are battery experts and BMS (battery protection circuit) experts. Personally, I have more than 20 years of experience from lead-acid batteries to lithium batteries.

Also, the KAIST team that I work with is competent, recognized by winning the Bennett Awards in the wired and wireless communications sector. It also has a long experience in AI and batteries. These human resources have gathered to prepare for superior technologies of Korea Power Cell.

What are your future plans?

Korea Power Cell has so many plans and new product launches. The lithium-ion battery pack I mentioned earlier is equipped with ICT technology, which is a wired/wireless communication technology, and AI technology that can predict defects or topics in advance has been added. So, we have received many requests for on-demand technology development, and now, we are busy working on more than 30 cases.

Not only that, we are developing many new technologies to improve existing technologies, and many business opportunities are coming through promotion in many exhibitions.

Overseas, Hitachi in Japan is interested in our battery's remote control solution system and requested to supply the lithium-ion battery with this technology combined. So, we sent the battery sample to Hitachi in June. If the sample is well evaluated, we expect that there will be an opportunity to export to Japan around the fourth quarter of this year.

Is there any value you are pursuing?

The value we are focusing on the most is "making the lithium battery customers want."

We learned that customers want a safe and long-lasting lithium battery, and for that purpose, we focused preparing the lithium battery as the first value by combining the ICT technology, wired/wireless communication technology, and AI technology that can be predicted, to provide the safe and long-lasting lithium battery that customers want.

Korea Power Cell's goal is to become a company that provides customers with the safe and long-lasting lithium battery they want in Korea and abroad to become the first company among SMEs in the field of lithium-ion batteries. For this, all of our employees are working hard, so please cheer for us.

Was there a KTVF program that was helpful?

We received great help from the KTVF this time, and we got the idea that it is possible to predict when the battery failed through real-time analysis of battery data collected by the Internet cloud. We figured out how to develop the next technology that combines the AI solution.

When I monitored the world, I found that not many companies are equipped with these technologies, and if we complete this technology well, we have a great opportunity to commercialize as the first mover in the global stage. I think gaining this idea was the greatest achievement we had by conducting the KTVF project.

Korea Techno-Venture Foundation (KTVF), which supported companies participating in the MIK HOT SPOT (Made in Korea Online Exhibition), is a non-profit foundation funded by the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) to promote new technology startups and support global advancement. Since its establishment in 2001, it has established a close cooperation network with research institutes, universities and related institutions, as well as overseas organizations in Japan and the Eurasia region, and have promoted step-by-step customized support projects that connects "startup - fostering - commercialization - global marketing" to create the entrepreneurship ecosystem. KTVF said, "As an accelerator that supports global technology commercialization through discovering, fostering, and investing in tech-startups with high growth potential, we intend to contribute to the success and job creation of small and medium-sized venture companies."

The global news network AVING News has begun holding the MIK Hot Spot (Made in Korea Online Exhibition) to help small and medium-sized companies enter the market and attract investment 365 days a year' AVING News has been running online exhibitions since 2005 and had 975 online exhibitions so far. Its YouTube online exhibition has placed itself as Korea's largest online exhibition hall that opens with 19,000 videos (booths) with more than 800,000 visits per month which means more than 10 million visits per year.

The MIK HOT SPOT online exhibition is scheduled to be held regularly according to the field, target market, and participating institutions, and it will be presented as a new type of online business by transforming the know-hows and values of the participating companies according to the trend. Companies that want to participate can apply and apply through the marketing support projects from supporting institutions in the local governments. Refer to the institutions for more information.
